Family Protection Act!
Must We Be The Losers?
(COURTESY DIGNITY-DETROIT) Those concerned for gay rights should be aware of anti-gay legislation pending in Congress and advocated by the so-called "Moral Majority". The chief danger would come from the so-called "Family Protection Act" being introduced in the Senate and the House (House Bill HR 311). The bill has been revised since the original draft which included the following provisions some of which have been modified but many yet remain which are destructive of gay rights.
Among the provisions of this act are the modification of the 1964 Civil Rights Act to specifically exclude gays from civil rights protection; wording to prohibit the federal government from enforcing nondiscrimination with respect to gays; the withholding of all federal funds (including federal welfare, veteran's benefits and Social Security) from any individual or group who suggest that homosexuality can be an acceptable alternative life style. It also forbids lawyers in the Legal Services Corporation (who offer legal help to the poor) from working on cases that involve gay rights, desegragation, divorce, etc., forbids the federal government from funding any child abuse or spousal abuse program without the specific concent of individual states; forbids the Supreme Court from reviewing any qualification a state may impose as a condition of teaching in that state; and forbids the federal funding of any textbook or curriculum which promotes values which are not those of the "local community" and which denies or diminishes the "role" differences between the sexes as they have been understood historically in the United States". This 70-page bill is an attempt to turn back the clock to 1950 and must be fought because of its anti-gay and anti-woman biases. Please write or phone your Congressmen and Senators to obtain a copy of the bill and then let them know how you feel about it. Alert other members of your communities about the bill. Do it now don't let the "Moral Majority" slip this through Congress!
